Choose the Best Air Conditioning System for Your Home

As warm weather and summertime heat approaches, many homeowners are seeking solutions to keep their homes comfortable and cool. They may need an air conditioning installation or replacement but aren’t sure which air conditioner to choose. Among their options are central AC systems and ductless mini split AC systems, and this post will compare them and discuss other options to help homeowners choose the right fit.

Central AC

ventCentral air conditioning is the most common air conditioning system and is a great choice for large homes, replacing an existing central AC system, and for homes with ductwork installed already. Central air systems use air ducts and vents to deliver cooled air throughout the home.

There are several advantages to central air conditioning compared to ductless cooling, including being more affordable to install, especially when the home already has air ducts, and being more aesthetically pleasing with only the air vents visible inside the home’s rooms.

Ductless Mini Splits

minisplitA ductless mini split AC system differs from central air systems since they don’t require ductwork to cool the home. Instead, they use indoor air handling units that deliver cool air to the rooms or zones in which they are located. They have benefits like better efficiency, leading to lower cooling costs, and more control over the temperature in individual rooms.

They are great options for homes without ducts or the space to install ducts, households that want to be able to individually control temperatures in different parts of the home, and those who want to cool spaces like garages, basements, or home additions that don’t have ductwork.

Other AC Options

In addition to central AC and ductless mini splits, homeowners also can select from air conditioners, such as a portable air conditioner or a window air conditioner. While these are beneficial for their affordability, they are not able to cool an entire home, and when multiple units must be purchased for a home, they lose this benefit as the cost adds up quickly. Here is some more information about them:

  • Portable AC unit: A portable AC unit can be moved from room to room, depending on which needs cooling, and can be stored away when not needed. However, they can only cool a small space like an individual room and sit on the floor, taking up floor space.
  • Window AC unit: A window AC unit doesn’t take up floor space and is instead installed in a window to cool that specific room. They are quieter than portable units, but the window it's in cannot be opened.

While portable and window AC units can provide cool air to a room, they are not ideal for cooling an entire home. So, a central AC or ductless mini-split system is a better choice when looking to cool an entire home.
