Now Trending: Halloween Trees and Twinkling Lights

More and more people are opting for traditional Christmas decorations a little earlier than normal. Not for Christmas, but for Halloween! Recent trends have made it normal to see orange and black trees and lights to enjoy the festivities. However, it’s important to ensure electrical outlets can handle these new festivities.

The following are questions Halloween lovers should consider:

How Often Should Outlets Be Replaced?

Commonly neglected or forgotten, but very important to maintaining a safe household is making sure outlets are replaced as needed. Traditional GFCI outlets last for around 12-15 years, but they may start failing after five years in some cases.

Since there is such a range in the life of outlets, it’s important to check on outlets every month. One way to do this for those with a GFCI outlet is to push the reset button while the light is plugged in; if it doesn’t turn off, it means the outlet isn’t working properly and needs to be replaced.

Additionally, if outlets tend to keep tripping for no apparent reason, this could be a sign that it’s time to replace the outlet. Another sure sign to replace an outlet is if there is any sign of discoloration or cracking.

What Types of Outlets Are Best for This?

There are two main types of outlets commonly used in households: Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) and Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCI). It is also common to see 20A circuits and outlets in rooms that may use devices that require more power, such as in garages or kitchens.

GFCI outlets are designed to quickly shut off power to an outlet if a short circuit of ground fault is detected. These outlets detect and allow normal electricity flow and maintain power, but if electricity flows beyond the regular electricity source, it will trip. This is especially helpful and an essential safety feature if the outlet is around water. The GFCI will stop the flow of electricity before it causes electrocution.

AFCI outlets protect arcs, or when electricity jumps from one wire to another. This often results in a fire and can be very dangerous. Modern homes had AFCI circuit breakers in their breaker boxes, but older homes would require outlets to be installed.

Like previously mentioned, 20A outlets are found in rooms with large appliances or appliances which use a large amount of power. 20A outlets have a small notch in the left-side prong opening.

Is Hiring a Professional Smart?

If households are considering a significant increase in electrical outlet use, it’s important to consider the benefits of working with a professional. Not only will outdoor lighting for decorations require a GFCI outlet, but there may also be other safety precautions to consider that professionals can inform homeowners of. Also, if outlets in a household haven’t been checked in quite some time, it may be smart and less time consuming to call a professional to get their opinion on the situation.
